One of the most legendary beverages in Penang, the famous Ais Tingkap, has celebrated its 100 years of operations!
100 years of Ais Tingkap
Ais Tingkap is one of the most famous beverages in Penang. Strategically located at Chowrasta Market, it is a must-try beverage for both locals and tourists alike. The thirst-quenching beverage is made with rose syrup, basil seeds, getah anggur, coconut flesh, and coconut rose. Of course, it is topped with shaved ice! It is the best beverage to combat Penang’s heat.
Yesterday, the family that operates the business, Seeni Rawther family, marked the occasion by giving away 1,000 beverages! Started by their great-great-grandfather Seeni Rawther, the business is now taken care by seven brothers including Mohamed Asri Seeni Mohamed. Started in 1919, the beverage was sold on a pushcart for 5 cents per cup. Now, it is RM2.50 per cup!

During the celebration, many Penangites joined the celebration. As we have all expected, there was a very long queue! Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow participated in the celebration and even tried making a cup of Ais Tingkap himself. If you want to get a cup yourself, it operates daily from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.!
