When it comes to Tom Yam, we’re all expecting that vibrant orangey-red soup base. Thick, creamy, spicy, sour, oh so delicious. A bowl of Tom Yam would make you drool, sweat and cry for it (spicy ma). That is, if you love Tom Yam. For those who have not or don’t have the guts to try it, we beg you to do so NOW. They’re heavenly good. Enough talking, let’s get into our best Tom Yam in Penang hunt.
1. Village Fish Head Noodles
We have featured Village a couple of times, yet we couldn’t stop mentioning it. Solely a noodle shop, fish head noodle to be exact. There are two soup base, fresh milky or tom yam. Get a table and go the counter to order your noodle. They have wide range of ingredients for you to add into your bowl, or just get the pre-fixed ones. The vibrant, piping hot and sour bowl of Tom Yam here is no joke. Definitely one of the best Tom Yam in Penang. Though waiting time could be a pain during the weekend.

2. Ju Heng Tomyam
Set in Butterworth is the ever famous Ju Heng tomyam. Many would drive over to mainland just to have a taste of it. Again, you get to pick and choose what ingredients you want to add-on, or get the pre-fixed. The fairly-priced tomyam is also Penangites favourite supper spot. Come after 8 p.m. to get a better taste of the soup, they are much richer as compared. Some say it’s super addictive, so eat at your own risk.

3. Min Jiang Coffee Shop
Run by a true Thai lady that has been localized for many years, it’s really easy to overlook Min Jiang Coffee Shop when passing by Air Itam Road. Just look out for O2 Clinic, the shop is located right beside it after the traffic light. This Thai Tomyam noodle is one of the few stalls in the coffee shop that stood out. They serve authentic, thick, spicy bowl of Tomyam with simple ingredients to follow. The waiting time could be a pain though as the lady cooks her orders bowl by bowl. Nevertheless, this is truly one of the best Tomyam in Penang that editor has ever tasted.

4. Lao Sher Tea House
From the outside, Lao Sher looks like a typical tea house where the older generations would gather and have tea over conversation. Little did we know Lao Sher serves really good Thai food, especially Tom Yam noodle. This humble tea house has only about 8 tables, serving down-to-earth dishes. Their bowl of Tom Yam is perfect for spicy intolerant people. Still, their Tom Yam managed to capture all the hearty flavors that will make you reminisce again and again. A hidden Tom Yam in Penang, pair your meal with their wide selection of tea.

5. Lai Hoe at Sunshine Market
Locals especially Chinese are no stranger to this Tom Yam in Penang. Set in Sunshine Square market, Lai Hoe Tomyam is always the top-pick for lunch, especially the white collars. We recommend pairing your Tom Yam with their minced pork, because they’re like the perfect match. For those who are really adventurous, you could also opt for porridge with Tom Yam soup base. “Adventurous” isn’t? Just by thinking of it makes us sweat.

Just by looking at the photos on Instagram will make you drool. Big, juicy lobster topped on creamy, spicy tom yam noodle together with other ingredients such as scallop, prawns and more. Of course, you get the freedom to pick whatever you want in your noodle, but the lobster is always the star.

8. Eastern Wishes Cafe
Don’t be fooled by the name, Eastern Wishes is actually an Asian style small restaurant set in I-Avenue. Their price is really wallet-friendly, plus it’s air-conditioned. Here, you could either order dishes to pair with rice or opt for their ala carte menu. Their Tom Yam noodle is really no joke. Dark, rich, spicy and sour, combined together is heavenly. They also have it in Dry version, which means fried Tom Yam noodle which is equally delicious. A huge thumbs up from editor!

9. Lye Lee Restaurant
Another good noodle spot in Penang, just take a look at the crowd and you’ll know. Lye Lee offers a wide range of noodles and porridge, their tom yam is what we’re talking about. Simple, hearty, hot bowl of tomyam would fil your tummy with happiness, so why not? Their servers are very attentive and Lye Lee is usually crowded. Try to avoid peak hours for better experience.

10. De’ Corner Kitchen
Located right opposite Padang Food Court, De’ Corner has ample parking spaces since it opens at 6 p.m. For those who’ve tried their Tom Yam at their previous location, no worries they’re still as good. Rich in flavor, the orangey-red soup base is so appetizing. Those who don’t fancy tom yam, try out their Milky Soup. Not many have talked about De’ Corner Kitchen, we feel like this Tom Yam in Penang deserves a shoutout.
