Sri Aruloli Thirumurugan temple, which is a 150-year-old temple on top of Penang Hill, is finally ready after undergoing 3-year major restoration work. The Hindu temple went through the major restoration as part of its 12-year consecration ceremony culminating today.
The Only Hindu Temple On The Iconic Penang Hill
During the restoration, RM 200,000 were spent for the structural repairs and painting. To get it’s title the colorful temple, 20 different shades of colors and over 500 litres of paint were used. The process was not an easy one due to the cold weather on the hill. The completion of this restoration was done with the help of 31 artisans from India.
The temple is located 750m above sea level, with the scenic view of Penang Hill’s northern jungles and the Melaka Straits. In the 1870s, Sri Aruloli Thirumurugan temple began as a small shrine. Then in the 1970s, a proper temple was built for the Indian devotees to have a place to worship. Most of the worshipers back then were helpers in the posh bungalows of wealthy residents.
The consecration today will be attended by dozens of yogis from India and all over the world. Holy water from the rivers of Kailash and Kasi will be used during this consecration ceremony.
