What’s the weirdest food you have eaten this year?

1. Laksa Carbonara – @hafizlapar

Laksa Carbonara sounds like a very interesting combination of local and Italian cuisine. Surprisingly, we have found a cafe located in Kuching, Sarawak, that serves this fusion food. Named Island Society Le Paradis Cafe, this cafe seems to serve other interesting pasta including Pandan Garlic Pasta. Will you be flying to Kuching to try this localized pasta yourself?

Address: 1950, Jalan Datuk Abang Abdul Rahim, 93450 Kuching, Sarawak.

Operating Hours: Opens daily, Sunday to Thursday, 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 7:00 a.m. – 10:30 p.m.

2. Ulat Ice-Cream – @0129hidayat

We have moved on from traditional ice-cream flavours such as vanilla and chocolate. In Malaysia, you can find so many localised flavours, especially from Inside Scoop. But, this is something out of this world. Scrolling through Instagram, we have found a place that serves ice-cream with “worms”! Known as Es Cream Cacing, located in Indonesia, this spot serves a variety of ice-cream flavours, with “worms” as a topping.

Address: Jl. D.I. Panjaitan Dekat Simpang 3 Sumber Rejo, Balikpapan, Indonesia.

Operating Hours: Opens daily, Monday, 10:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m., Tuesday, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m., Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m., Thursday, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m., Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m., Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m., Sunday, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.

Malaysians love belacan! Pair it with any dish, and it is heaven. In case you missed out, belacan made it to international news when Malaysians were cooking this fermented condiment in France. Neighbours called the police thinking that there was a dead body in the house. Being true Malaysians, we all can agree that sambal belacan smells and tastes so good! Even on cornflakes, too?

5. Nasi Lemak with Sambal Strawberry – @a_slice3012

It is sambal, but with a little sweetness! Surprisingly, one of the biggest food delivery serves a nasi lemak with strawberry sambal. If you are up to try out another version of sambal, check out dahmakan when you’re in Klang Valley. This version of nasi lemak is served with rempah roast chicken, caramelised kacang ikan bilis, and strawberry sambal. Are you up for it?

6. Maggi Curry with Durian – @_.redza.gaming.guys_

Here’s to another Malaysian favourite making into this list, durians! In 2019, the durian season was pretty wild with many cafes and restaurants creating one of a kind dishes with the king of fruits. Aside from the usual durian ice-cream, and puffs, chicken chop with durian sauce was available too. But, the idea of eating Maggi Curry with durian sounds a little too extreme. What do you think?

7. Watermelon Dip with Asam Pedas Kuah – @uncle_bobr

Just, no.

8. Laksa Pizza & Hokkien Mee Pizza – @yeefengg

Photo: @furamasingapore (Instagram)

Here’s something that you don’t see every day! Hokkien Mee Pizza and Laksa Pizza is surely an unthinkable fusion. But, it is available! We have found a restaurant serving Laksa Pizza, topped with hard-boiled eggs, tau pok, and laksa leaves. It is all the way in sunny Singapore, though. However, if you are looking to try out some localised pizzas, US Pizza is always a great idea! Petai Pizza, anyone?

Laksa Pizza

Address: Furama RiverFront, 405 Havelock Rd, Singapore 169633

Petai Pizza

Address: 3-D, Lorong Delima 1 Jelutong, 11600 George Town

9. Roti Canai with Mayonnaise – @tzeweei

Roti canai needs no introduction, guys. It’s the bomb! Breakfast? Can. Lunch? Can. Dinner? No problem! Roti canai paired with mayonnaise sounds like a poor combination. If you didn’t know already, mayonnaise is made with a stable emulsion of oil, egg yolk, and an acid, either vinegar or lemon juice. Would you like your roti canai with a side of lemon juice?

10. Crispy Rendang – @danial_adzryll

Photo: @lisafoodadventures (Instagram)

Here’s a poke to Masterchef UK! In an episode aired in 2018, the judges commented that the rendang made by a fellow Malaysian contestant was not crispy. Naturally, the comment sparked rage among Malaysians. The story has a good ending with fellow contestant publishing a book with the title, “My Rendang Isn’t Crispy”. Surprisingly, a new dish is born. Would you try?

What about you?

This list certainly proves that there are many foodies out there that are willing to go the distance to try out something entirely new. From eating crocodile meat to dipping roti canai into mayonnaise! Hopefully, we have all fall in love with something new this year. What is your most adventurous meal in 2019?
