We’re pretty sure you guys have heard about the system that’ll be installed by the next month set to replace the coupon-scratching method parking that everyone dislikes (no offence). Under the Penang Smart Parking (PSP) system, subscribed drivers will be notified of available public parking spots through a smartphone app that will also accept e-wallet fare payments. The app will also allow for easier enforcement action as it will send a notification if the user did not pay for the parking.

The PSP system is expected to be launched next month on the 18th of August.

Local government, housing and town and country planning committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the PSP system was a private finance initiative (PFI) and did not cost the state to implement. He also mentioned that they’ll be launching the pilot system in the heritage city of George Town next month before it is rolled out to the whole state in phases.

The state has a total 36,000 parking lots with 12,000 on the island and the rest on the mainland. It’ll take about a year to install the PSP system for all of the lots so, to start, about 650 lots in George Town were identified as the first phase.

The parking rates remain at 40 cents per hour on the mainland and 80 cents per hour on the island.

Looks like there isn’t going to be any changes to the parking rate. Monthly parking passes will also remain at RM150 under the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and RM75 under the Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP).

Parking coupons will be valid until the 31st of December next year.

As for the existing parking coupons, they’ll still be available in the market until the end of the year and it’ll officially cease its validity by the 31st of December next year. We think it’s a pretty genius idea and we can’t wait to try it out. Well, parking’s going to be so much more convenient and easy from then on!

  1. I wonder why they’re pushing us to use more mobile based applications whether we like them or not. What’s wrong with coupon parking system? Who assumes that people dislike it. I love scratch coupons. It’s so convenient & does not require a battery to operate. Not everyone is tech savy. What about those who do not have a smart phone? What if the phone battery is dead? Really stupid decision to implement yet another system when people just got used to the existing scratch coupon parking system which replaced old parking meter system.
