Mellowcup Coffee - Presentable, Artistic Coffee for the Eyes and Soul

Greeting Foodies, in today’s post, we’re going to share with you a you-might-heard-of cafe that has long run its business since 2015 — Mellowcup Coffee. We went there last week, tried out their food and drinks and here’s what we thought.

Located right opposite Penang Chinese Girl’s School, you might miss Mellowcup Coffee at first glance due to their small storefront, camouflaged by other businesses. We would say that Mellowcup Coffee is a hidden gem that’s forgotten by the public. Specializing in coffees instead of mains, their coffees are wow factors. Don’t get us wrong, they do serve mains and are pretty delicious.

Upon entering, you’ll notice the decorations on your right that resembles some sort of feng shui, maybe that’s why the cafe feels cozy and welcoming. The ambiance is clean, simple yet warm, setting off a humble vibe.

Okay moving on to coffee, the highlight of this article. Mellowcup Coffee has their own signature Ice Drip Coffee, which is the Dutch Coffee. Steeped overnight using ice water, the coffee is left for fermentation in order to release all the flavors, making it denser and richer in flavor. Different from cold brews, the Dutch Coffee is a lot richer and smoother due to its composition.

Since their introduction of Dutch Coffee, Mellowcup has now come up with three new exciting flavors — Sweet Romance, Cherry Berry, and Honey Blossom. Each bottle is priced at RM 20, you can get the whole set for only RM 58, which comes with really nice waterproof packaging that’s perfect for a gift.

Sweet Romance has a subtle floral scent to it, delivering sweetness into your mouth. Both sweet and floral taste lingers in your mouth as an aftermath upon the first sip, not overpowering, but enough to taste it. This is perfect to pair with your mains as it’s not too overpowering and strong.

Cherry Berry is definitely our favorite out of all three. Upon opening the bottle, you can immediately smell that the coffee is sweet and fruity. This flavor is packed with berries, and the combination of coffee and berries are extraordinary as if a new flavor just formed in your mouth. Cherry Berry is sweeter than the other two flavors, perfect for ladies or first-timers.

Honey Blossom, on the other hand, is not as sweet as it sounds. It is smooth and rich, coffee lovers, this is definitely worth to try. There’s a hint of sweetness to it that could be barely noticed but pair it with honey, and be prepared to be wowed.

Did you know that Mellowcup Coffee also offers Blooms Roastery and Craft Tea all the way from Hong Kong? You might be unfamiliar with Blooms but definitely not the famous Hong Kong TVB actor Moses Chan (陈豪). He’s the founder of Blooms, so fans out there, be sure to check out his coffee okay!

Of course, our review wouldn’t be complete without any mains. We ordered two of their highly recommended mains, and here they are.

The Creamy Carbonara comes with a hot spring egg on top of it that’s ooey gooey, perfect for Instagram shots. Poke the egg and the yoke will run down, mixing both the pasta and egg together for the best combination. The pasta is creamy with a tinge of garlic but not too filling, unlike other carbonaras.

Again, hot spring egg sounds like a thing in Mellowcup Coffee. The chicken is grilled to perfection, juicy and tender. The barbecue sauce is served separately so that you can have control of how much sauce you want in your chicken. The sauce pairs so well with the chicken, very appetizing. The egg sits on top of the mash potato as a side, and the yolk run down when you poke it, so satisfying.

We almost forgot to mention about their Libra Coffee, one out of the 12 horoscope coffee series. Just look at the presentation, delivering Japanese vibes.

For those who love coffee with the floral scent to it, this is perfect. The floral flavour is very saturated, it did not cover up the coffee, but instead balances the bitterness of the coffee really well, we love it.
