More Than 170 Non-Muslim Houses Of Worship Will Reopen From June 10 Onwards

only in Covid-19 green zone areas

Starting from June 10, a total of 174 non-muslim houses of worship in the green zone areas will resume its services under strict Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP). Depending on the size of the approved house of worship, the National Unity Ministry said in a statement that only 30 people are allowed at one time in each service.

Houses Of Worship To Adhere To Strict SOP

For places of worship to make arrangements before resuming their services, the National Unity Ministry has released a list of SOP. It includes:

  • Devotees showing signs of fever, cough, breathing difficulties and flu are not allowed to attend.
  • Devotees aged 70 above and children below 12 are prohibited from attending services.
  • Devotees diagnosed with diabetes, cancer and other non-communicable diseases are not encouraged to attend services.
  • Distance marker of one metre, both visible and adhesive, must be compulsorily placed on the floor.
  • All attendees must wear face masks.
  • Houses of worship will provide hand sanitiser and conduct body temperature checks.

The approved houses of worship includes:

  • one Buddhist place of worship
  • three Roman Catholic churches
  • eight Sikh gurdwara
  • 14 Taoist houses of worship
  • 64 Evangelical churches
  • 84 Hindu temples

Additionally, the ministry also said that all non-Muslim weddings to be held in houses of worship are barred for now, at least until July 31.

Kuala Lumpur & Selangor Not Included

The approved places by the National Security Council (NSC) are only for those within Covid-19 green zone areas, which means churches and temples in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor are still not allowed to operate. The ministry said applications for the reopening of other places of worship can be made through their respective religious bodies after June 10, adding that applications will be brought forward to the special Cabinet meeting for approval from time to time.
