Penang’s Gama Listed On The Malaysia Book Of Records As The ‘Oldest Supermarket & Departmental Store’

There are plenty of reasons to be a proud Penangite. From having world-famous street food to having the longest zip coaster in Malaysia, Penang sure is making its own name on the international arena. Today, there is one more reason worth celebrating. Penang’s Gama has just been listed on the Malaysia Book of Records as being the ‘Oldest Supermarket & Departmental Store’.

Homegrown Supermarket, Gama Makes It Into the Malaysia Book of Records

According to Buletin Mutiara, this homegrown supermarket brand was launched way back in 1967. Before being named Gama as it is today, it was actually ‘Pulau Pinang Supermarket’ at the Chowrasta Market on Penang Road.

Then, in 1980, the supermarket relocated to its current location on Jalan Datuk Keramat. And, in 2022, Gama has just turned 55 years old. In line with this milestone, they have also bagged the Malaysia Book of Records title as the ‘Oldest Supermarket & Departmental Store’ in the nation. This is indeed a huge achievement that is worth celebrating.

In fact, this certificate was supposed to be presented to Gama in 2020 but was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
