1. Sweet Bar Cafe
One of our favourite cafes in Penang with really good coffee is none other than Sweet Bar Cafe. Think small, cozy and humble, then you’ll get an exact image of Sweet Bar Cafe. We love their attention to details, like how each cup of coffee that you order comes with a boarding pass complete with everything you need to know about the coffee; from the origin to its flavour characteristics. They are the winner of BOBC Battle of Barista Championship 2019 and ranked 4th in Malaysia National Brewers Cup 2022. Did we mention Sweet Bar Cafe also has some really good sweet treat? Their Brownies, Banana Bread and Creme Brulee are all highly recommended.

2. Slow Coffee Person Coffee Bar
As the name suggests, Slow Coffee Person Coffee Bar is a lovely little cafe in George Town that exudes a laid back and chill vibe. Feel free to ask for coffee recommendations and the owner will share his in-depth knowledge on his extensive coffee selection. You can enjoy various pour-over options to regular espresso based drinks here as well. Here’s a friendly reminder, as they’re a humble little cafe, you may need to be patient with the waiting time.

3. Ome by Spacebar Coffee
Ome by Spacebar Coffee is nestled in a quiet alley of George Town, and it’s a cozy retreat if you’re a true coffee lover. Specializing in handcrafted coffees, including espresso-based drinks, hand brews, and cold nitro options, they also feature a selection of homemade cakes, such as the popular olive oil zucchini bread. 4. Ang Ang’s Roastery
If you’re in Penang, you must have definitely come across Ang Ang’s Roastery outlets that are scattered all over Penang! First established in Bukit Mertajam, they expanded to Penang island, Butterworth, Simpang Ampat as well as Kulim, Kedah. Well, this means that Ang Ang’s Roastery is a popular coffee spot loved by many! They serve coffee, cakes, as well as pastries and considering how most of their outlets are pretty aesthetic with spacious al-fresco area, Ang Ang’s Roastery makes for a great hangout spot.

5. Double Check Coffee
As a relatively new cafe in Penang, Double Check will probably have you double checking them out thanks to their bright orange exterior contrast against the historical George Town building. Step inside and you’ll find yourself wanting to bask in the simple space with a cup of coffee in hand. Unsure what to order? Our personal favourite is their Dirty Latte with the perfect composition and balance between milk and the pulled espresso.

Norm Micro Roastery is set in a spacious industrial looking shophouse with lots of bright natural sunlight that shines through high glasshouse-style ceilings. Check out their stellar coffee and bold signatures like the Norm Essential, Prawn & Pumpkin Risotto, Chicken Karaage Burger and Citrus Passion Waffle with Earl Grey Ice Cream that’s all plated to perfection. It’s definitely the trendiest cafe to take all your Insta-worthy food snaps and OOTDs.

AE, AE, AE, I’m on vacation~ We’re talking about AE Coffee, a quaint little cafe tucked in the heart of George Town with really good coffee. Come over for a cuppa and you’ll definitely stay over for the chill, laid back vibes. They also have fresh pastries by Rustique Bakehouse like Blueberry Danish, Cinnamon Roll, Banana Bread and more. AE Coffee has recently expanded to cater to more coffee lovers.

8. Macallum Connoisseurs
Remember the spacious warehouse cafe in Penang that spans 8,000 square feet of space? Yup, Macallum Connoisseurs has now relocated to another space but still retains most of its urban vibes. They’ve also revamped their menu to include different types of pasta but the OG Aglio e Olio is still the same. As they’re also a coffee roaster, their hand brewed coffee is still amazing, from the aroma to the balanced flavour and mouthfeel. Oh, did we mention their new location now has ample parking space?

9. Orca Brew
We love a good ol’ hidden cafe and Orca Brew is one cafe that you need to check out when in Penang. It’s cozily tucked along an alley in Nagore Square, and once you step inside, you’ll be mesmerized by the space that has plenty of natural lighting with just the right amount of green. Get ready to enjoy quality brews coupled with pastries and most importantly, chill vibes.

10. The Founders
We’re pretty sure The Founders needs no introduction. Beautiful Bali-inspired decoration that makes the perfect backdrop for your photo op, they serve quite a variety of coffee that you absolutely need to pair with their freshly-baked pastries like World’s Best Bagels, Cinnamon Rolls and more. Of course, don’t forget to try out their main courses too like The OG! Quesadillas, Tiger Prawn Linguini, Spicy Thai Chicken Pasta and Barramundi with Carrot Butter.

Tucked away on 5 Stewart Lane near the Goddess of Mercy Temple, The Alley is a cosy coffee spot in Penang that’s popular for their signature churros and coffee. Each set of churros comes with a dip and a topping, so you get to choose from chocolate dip, caramel dip, oreo, and more. Their churros sell out pretty fast, so if you don’t get the chance to enjoy them, we recommend trying out their Key Lime Pie instead!
