We certainly know how it feels like to be sitting in the middle of lecture while pondering what’s for lunch. Perhaps you’ve been eating campus food for 3 out of 5 days and you’d like to try something outside of campus. If you still have no idea what to feast on, we’re here to save the day. We’ll be taking you on a tour outside of USM and we’ve curated a list of things you should try around this awesome uni. 1. Hutton Lane Restaurant (糖水小铺)

Calling all traditional dessert lovers! If you’re looking for something sweet, head on over to Hutton Lane Restaurant for their 糖水 that is soothing to the throat especially in this insane scorching Penang weather. Their list of sweet traditional desserts include Red Bean Soup, Ginger Soup Tang Yuan, Sesame Paste and more. They also offer a list of other delicacies such as Seafood Fried Rice, Tom Yam Maggi with Fried Fish Grouper and plenty more. You will undoubtedly be spoilt for choice.

2. Aki Pancake @ Super Tanker Food Court

It has been said that each one of us have got a different stomach that is reserved specially for desserts only. So, no worries if you’re too full for lunch. Besides, a slice (or two) of this crispy crusted pancake wouldn’t make such a huge difference right? Get ready to be pampered with the unique varieties of toppings that can go with the pancake (some will blow your mind away) such as the sweet toppings of Peanut Butter Cheese, Brown Sugar Banana ORRR if you’d prefer a savory pancake, we highly recommend the Tuna Cheese pancake.

3. Maxim Dim Sum Restaurant

The smell of fresh baked pastries and warm trays of steaming hot dim sum…who could actually resist them? Head on over to Maxim Dim Sum Restaurant for a vast array of unique, mouth-watering dim sum selections. Egg Tarts, Custard Buns, Siew Mai, Har Gow, Lo Mai Gai and if you could name it, they will have it. This Dim Sum joint opens till 2pm, so you can head on over for lunch as well. If you’re wondering, no one actually thinks it’s weird to “yum cha” for lunch. Go ahead.

4. Hokkien Mee @ Happy Cafe

Up for some aromatic and flavorful bowl of Hokkien Mee that has just the right balance of both spicy and sweet? Make your way to Taman Pekaka’s kopitiam, Happy Cafe and you’ve signed yourself up for an enticing bowl of prawn-based soup noodles with essential ingredients like prawns, bean sprouts, kangkung and half-boiled egg. Ordinary but packed with Penang flavours; this is truly comfort food in a bowl (of Hokkien Mee).

5. The Mac’s Penang

Well-known among the students of USM as well as residents around Bukit Gambir, this humble and unassuming stall located in Plaza Ivory (directly opposite of USM Bukit Gambir gate), sells gooey, oozy cheese loaded Mac and Cheese, with a twist. They actually add beef bacon chunks AND NACHO CHIPS in them and then they are flambéed to perfection! And if you have to know, they are a Muslim-friendly eatery (YAY). Now, let us all hold hands and rejoice at this yummy midnight snack. You can easily distinguish this joint by their bright yellow canopy tent, like the colour of their Mac & Cheese. (Coincidence? We doubt so ?)

6. Plus 2 Restaurant  (加二餐厅)

A quintessential area to all USM students is none other than Sungai Dua. It is literally a food haven as the entire area is mushroomed with eateries. One specific family-friendly restaurant, Plus 2 has a variety of delectables that you can feast on ranging from dishes for Chu Char, or even the ala carte fried noodles (Hokkien Char, Fried Singapore Bihun and plenty more). You can also opt for the delicious and flavorful Wan Tan Mee that is right outside of the restaurant.

7. Shariff Nasi Kandar

Penangites would buzz when we hear Deen Nasi Kandar, right? But did you know that there are plenty of other Nasi Kandar stalls that are equally worth buzzing over? Wait, we mean, queuing for. One of them is Shariff Nasi Kandar which also gathers long queue lines from residents of Gelugor. Their “Ayam Roast” is certainly a dish to die for. (Okay, we may have exaggerated a little but there’s a hint of truth sprinkled in there) Housed within the Jalan Permai Food Complex, you can easily locate Shariff Nasi Kandar by their long queue which consists of hardcore curry lovers. What are you waiting for? Join the queue at Shariff Nasi Kandar today!

8. Korean Cafe ShwimPyo

It’s pretty rare to find a Korean restaurant that is Muslim-friendly. So when we locate one near USM, we couldn’t contain our excitement. This eatery has an interior that is cosy, minimalist and serves authentic Korean Food that is halal as well as friendly to the pocket (truly a gem for USM students). Be prepared to savour their Dakbulgogi, Jjigae, Kimbap and plenty more.

9. Man Burger @ Sungai Dua

Are you having an insurmountable craving for a burger that has a fluffy bun and a well-seasoned juicy patty? Our suggestion of Man Burger is here to save the day! (You’re welcome) Their burgers come with coleslaw too! It usually takes a minimum of 30-minute wait due to the high amount of orders but we’ve got a foodie tip: Drop them a line, place your order and collection time then you can sit back, enjoy the burger while beating the long queue line. 10.  Kim Hin Cafe 锦兴茶餐室

The last on our list of Things to Eat around University of Science, Malaysia (USM) is Chu Char in Kim Hin Cafe 锦兴茶餐室. This is the go to place if you’re looking for a Chu Char spot nearby USM whereby you can taste the chef’s magnificent ‘wok hei’ in every dish. Here, you can get reasonably priced chu char dishes that has the quality of a top-rated seafood restaurant. Also a spot that is able to house large crowds, we highly suggest you to bring along your friends, families and roommates along.
