In order for this Penang Smart Parking (PSP) sensor system to be installed, a total of 997 parking bays around Penang will be closed. If you’re worried about not being able to find spots to park your car, don’t worry because the parking bays will be closed in stages from 19 July 2019 – 25 August 2019.

According to Jagdeep Singh Deo who is the chairman of State Housing, Local Government, Town, and Rural Development Committee, the first phase of this project will include 647 parking bays on the island and 350 bays in Seberang Perai. With this new PSP sensor system, the public can pay their parking fees via an app that will be available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

The launching for this pilot project will be done by Penang’s Chief Minister, Chow Kon Yeow, on 18 August 2019 and the operation will begin on 19 August 2019. It will take at least a year for this project to complete. The rates will remain the same which is RM0.80 per hour on the island and RM0.40 for Seberang Perai. Monthly passes will cost RM150 per month on the island and RM75 per month in Seberang Perai.

More information regarding the parking rate based on time and day which will be standardized will be released soon by the government.
