Top 15 Must-Try Food You Can’t Miss Out In Sungai Petani

This town that’s only an hour’s drive from Penang has got some fantastic foods that are waiting for us. Get ready because we’re going to get you covered for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. From Cheesy Sandwich to Nyonya Laksa, let’s get started!

BREAKFAST: 

1. Banana Leaf Rice @ Chennai Curry House

A spot that’s known to have the best Indian food in Sungai Petani, Chennai Curry House is famous for both its North and South Indian dishes. Popular for its traditional banana leaf rice and mutton masala, this place has been in town for more than a decade. They also serve varieties of vegetarian Indian dishes that are equally yummy. Mango Lassi is their signature drink too.

You know a place has good food when there’s a queue before the doors are opened. Famous among seniors, it is namely the oldest Dim Sum place in Sungai Petani. A must-try dish here is their Big Bun (大包). As big as our hand, it’s packed with a generous amount of juicy chicken and pork meat that’s seasoned just right. So drop by for a delicious dim sum that you’re not going to regret!

The next must-try food in Sungai Petani is Lemuni Rice. For some of us, it’s quite an unfamiliar dish. But Lemuni leaves are actually beneficial to prevent bloating and restore vitality. When cooked with basmati rice, it gives a herbal taste that’s a perfect match with spicy chicken sambal. Their kacang pool (broad bean with a sunny side up) is also a must-try!

4. Traditional Bread @ Lollipop Cafe and Bakery

You’ll think this is a normal bakery right? But it’s actually one of the best breakfast spots for the locals.  Ranging from Tuna Cheese Toast to Half-Boiled Egg with Kaya Toast, they make their bread using natural yeast and no additives. Isn’t this the kind of breakfast we need to fuel up our day? Also, try their Tik Tik Kopi, which is a local twist on drip coffee!

If you’re a fan of both traditional and Western breakfast, you’ve got to visit G Patio for their creative sandwich menu. From delicious sandwiches with melted cheese to local half-boiled eggs, you’ll be satisfied with the choices that they serve here. Moreover, they’ve got a really pretty environment that’s just nice for a calm and cozy morning breakfast.

Mention Chinese dishes (煮炒) to a local in Sungai Petani and they’ll definitely say it’s at Sin Yik Wah. This place has been passed down three generations and has been in town for more than 75 years. Also famous for their Roasted Pork and Homemade Sausage, it’s yet another place that brings back nostalgic memories of classic Chinese foods. Come early for lunch because most signature dishes are sold out as early as 1:30PM!

2. Grilled Squid @ Top D Gurun

Grilled squids are common to find but what’s so special about Top D Gurun’s Grilled Squid is its giant size! This place went viral because of its delicious fatty Grilled Squid that’s packed with squid roe. It is then drenched in their rich and spicy sambal that’s just a perfect match with the squid. With long queues and fully packed tables at lunch hour, you know you can’t go wrong with this.

3. Fried Chicken with Sticky Rice @ Azizah Corner

Another must-try food is Fried Chicken with Sticky Rice. Here at Azizah Corner, they’ve got crispy Thai Fried Chicken with Sticky Rice that has left many people craving for it over and over again. Selling mostly Thai food, they’ve got other food like Koay Teow Soup with Beef Balls too. It’s another place that’s always packed at lunchtime, so come early to avoid the crowd!

This thick broth Assam Laksa at Xiao Er Laksa is a must-try! It’s undeniably the best place to have Assam Laksa in Sungai Petani. Ticking all the boxes for sourness, sweetness, and savoury, Xiao Er Laksa has the right balance that we need. It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re craving for a sour and rich Assam  Laksa in Sungai Petani.

Yes, you’ve heard it right. It’s a Cheesy Murtabak that has gained so much fame at a Nasi Kandar store. Hussain Nasi Kandar is undeniably one of the best places to grab some delicious Nasi Kandar. But this Cheesy Murtabak has got our attention and many locals say it’s the best Murtabak in town! Don’t say we never warn you, but it’s Briyani and Nasi Kandar are really tasty too.

1. Spicy and Sour Fish @ Mae Salong Thai Restaurant

Mae Salong is for Thai food lovers. Established since 10 years ago, Mae Salong has gained its name in the local’s heart for the best Thai food. Kaeng Som Siakap aka Spicy and Sour Siakap Fish is what you need to order when you’re there. Don’t blame us for making you eat too much because this spicy, sweet and sour fish is just the best combo with your rice.

2. Nyonya Laksa @ MM Nyonya Delight

With limited Nyonyan restaurants left, it’s quite hard to find one that’s delicious and authentic. But now we’ve finally got one at MM Nyonya Delight. Selling Nyonya Assam Curry to Fried Koay Teow, the most famous dish is yet its Nyonya Laksa. Creamy coconut milk and flavourful broth, it’s a Nyonya Laksa that’s delicately prepared with a long list of ingredients. Trust us, you’re going to love this.

3. Lor Bak @ Medan Selera Jalan Dewa

Another place for Hawker food lovers is nonetheless at Medan Selera Jalan Dewa. You can’t say you’ve visited this food court if you haven’t tried out their Lor Bak! Selling freshly fried Lor Bak and other snacks, it’s never complete until you taste their complimentary gravy and chili sauce. Always a long queue lined up in front of the stall, you’ll easily spot this Lor Bak stall!

Beryani Aqeem, many people call it to have the best Briyani Rice spot in town. There are choices of meat from chicken, mutton to beef, but the locals strongly recommend mutton meat to go along their scented Briyani rice. A little tip to you all, their Mutton meat is always sold out at early hours. So make sure to come early to get a taste of this delicious delight that the locals love.

5. Salted Egg Seafood @ Jade Garden Seafood Restaurant

Another must-try food in Sungai Petani is salted egg seafood dishes! At Jade Garden, not only they’ve got prawns and crabs, but they also have live lobsters. Salted egg crab and lobster is a must-order here, with rich and creamy salted egg sauces stir-fried together with the fresh seafood. Even non-crab lovers have claimed that this is good.
