Chinese New Year is all about family reunion and homecoming, but that also makes our bustling streets quiet down as vendors and restaurants close down for the first two days on CNY. If you’re still wondering where you can find delicious foods on CNY days, then keep scrolling. Because we have compiled a list of 10 restaurants that are open during CNY in Penang.

1. Macallum Connoisseur

This cafe that’s located in Gat Lebuh Macallum is one of a few Industrial style cafes that we have in Penang. Starting at 9AM, they even have a separate breakfast menu selling light breakfast muesli to delicious egg benedict. Oh and don’t fret if you arrive later on the day. Because there are really juicy pork burgers and a list of pasta dishes that are waiting for you.

2. YumCha Tea Parlour (得閒飲茶)

A very cute name to begin with, this cafe’s name translates into “Let’s meet up during your free time” in Cantonese. With an interior that’s decorated with a mixture of Oriental and Western, YumCha Tea Parlour serves mainly Taiwanese and Shanghainese inspired dishes. From the signature Xiao Long Bao or soup buns to Golden Crab Noodles, it’s a place you wouldn’t want to miss with your friends this CNY.

3. Wheeler’s Coffee

A cafe that’s easily spotted with a hanging bicycle next to its name, Wheeler’s Cafe serves authentic brunch that both locals and tourists love. Located along the busy Love Lane, this cozy cafe features a flattering brunch menu from Wheeler’s Big Breakfast to Pumpkin with Poached Egg. Not to mention, they’ve also got Espresso Chicken that’s both savoury and sweet!

4. ChinaHouse

The longest cafe in Penang, ChinaHouse is popular for its 50 types of cakes that are made daily. Serving from breakfast to dinner, they’ve got a typical brunch menu as well as fusion foods like Hokkien Spaghetti Bolognese. Oh, and don’t miss out on a chance to doodle on the piece of paper that’s laid underneath your plate when you get seated!

5. Monga Fried Chicken

Every country has it’s own twist of fried chicken and Monga Fried Chicken is the Taiwanese one. Serving tender fried chicken fillet with up to 4 types of seasonings, popcorn chicken as well as seaweed and spicy chips, it’s undeniably a Taiwanese snack heaven. Aside from the snacks, they’ve also got their own chewy bubble tea and refreshing fruit tea to pair with their food too!

6. Canning Dim Sum Express

A meaty dim sum meal is all it needs to energise your body up, isn’t it? Canning Dim Sum Express is a little special Dim Sum spot that’s different from your usual one. That’s because this is a pork-free restaurant. Don’t fret if you worry about the taste, because even though there’s no pork, each dish is still really yummy. Try out their signature Abalone Caviar Mai and Lava Pau that oozes sweet runny yolks!

7. Mugshot Cafe

This famous cafe that’s got a spot for you to take a mugshot photo (as if you’re a coffee addict), will be opening throughout CNY! Featuring Danish pastries from croissants to savoury smoked salmon bagels, it’s a small fulfilling spot to dine in. Not to forget, they’re famous for their lovely coffee drinks too. So don’t miss out on this cafe that’s just located along Chulia Street.

8. Bricklin Cafe & Bar

Situated on the same row as Hin Bus Depot & The Swagger Salon, Bricklin Cafe & Bar can be easily spotted by the coffee aroma. Featuring coffee beans from across the world, each cup of coffee has a distinct flavour and taste to it. Food-wise, they serve a cute Poke bowl that’s nutritiously filled with proteins to delicious runny eggs that’s sandwiched between sesame bagels. It’s a cafe not to miss!

9. ChiliHead Social Bar & Eatery

Serving appetising Thai cuisine, ChiliHead has got it covered from Thai tapas to curries to skewers to mango sticky rice and the list really just goes on. Aside from that, frequent live bands add versatility to this busy restaurant and let us guarantee you, it always sounds good. If you’re feeling a little more Western for this Chinese New Year, then try it out at Arang Coffee. Situated in Bayan Lepas, this cozy cafe serves local twist of Western food like squid ink pasta that’s cooked in green curry sauce to authentic Italian pizza. Oh and not to mention, they’ve got good coffees and latte art too.
